Curriculum and Instruction
The state standards are to be guaranteed and viable. Guaranteed - meaning all students are taught all standards (uniformity required in law). Viable - meaning that instructional time is sufficient for the teaching of the standards, providing multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their level of performance and receive support and intervention as appropriate.
The state standards no longer cover the full scope of what a school will and should offer. That will now be the work of local districts. Rather, the state focus is on a set of standards where proficiency on essential learnings, placed at appropriate grade levels, will be assessed on state and/or district assessment systems. Alignment as to what should come before or opportunities to go beyond the guaranteed set of state standards now lies within the local district’s curricular design and course offerings.
These focused state standards must meet statutory requirements for every student to have the opportunity to acquire sufficient knowledge and skills, at a minimum, to enter the University of Wyoming and Wyoming community colleges, to prepare students for the job market or postsecondary vocational and technical training and to achieve the general purposes of education that equips students for their role as a citizen and participant in the political system and to have the opportunity to complete both intellectually and economically in society.
